‘As a Democrat in Arizona, I Voted for McCain’

Brad Burns, Roanoke, Tex.

I’m a Democrat and I voted for John McCain in the 2000 presidential primary and the 2008 general election. I think people will look back and realize that he would have been an excellent president.

‘Your integrity, honor and courage are second to none’

RIP Senator McCain, while you served this country on so many levels — as an R, I found it difficult to support your positions on many occasions. That said, your integrity, honor and courage are second to none, thank you for that. We could certainly use more men that modeled your support for our democracy. I salute you and will always remember you fondly. May the next life treat you well.

‘He wasn’t afraid to break from the Republican rank and file’

I’m a Democrat, and a minority with a personal stake in multiple divisive issues. Even so, I respected John McCain so much that my ultimate dream job was to someday be his congressional aide.

McCain was one of the few members of Congress who clearly understood that holding that office was an immense honor and an enormous responsibility. He wasn’t afraid to break from the Republican rank and file — not because he was a liberal hero in disguise, but because he was a rational person who took his job seriously.

Personally, I will always be grateful to John McCain. The Affordable Care Act has literally saved my life, especially in the past year. McCain was one of three Republicans to vote against repealing it.

Though Trump and the G.O.P. are still trying to do everything in their power to dismantle one of Obama’s key accomplishments, McCain (and two Republican women, and Democrats) helped save it from being destroyed altogether. A worthy legacy for a politician.
